Kidney Stones

Kidney stone is a commonly used term for a hard mass that is found anywhere in the urinary tract. The calcium in the urine combines with the oxalates or phosphates or other waste material, to form crystals. These crystals in turn unite to form a stone. Stones can be painful or silent i.e. symptomless.

Kidney stones are one of the common and most painful disorders of the urinary tract. The pain can appear as an emergency, since it is extremely unbearable. Pain indicates that the stone can pass out, since pain is due to spasmodic effort of the body to throw it out.

Many kidney stones can pass out of the body without any surgical intervention. Stones that are creating complications may be treated by various modern techniques which do not involve surgery. Routine urine examination may detect crystals and their type will suggest the cause. X-ray of the abdomen and pelvis may locate the stone and indicate its size. Ultrasound of the abdomen is also advised. During case taking, family history of kidney stones is usually present.

Sudden, unbearable pain on the sides of the abdomen is usually the first symptom complained of. As the stone passes down in the tract it continues to cause the pain and may cause bleeding which passes along with the urine.

Frequent urine infections are also seen. If the stone becomes very big, it causes back-pressure of the urine, which can lead to slow kidney damage. Therefore, timely and proper medication is important. Homoeopathy is excellent to help expel out the stones painlessly. Homoeopathy is also extremely successful in preventing recurrence of stones.

Along with medication the patient needs to have 2 to 3 liters of water daily. Drinking Barley water is very helpful. It causes a good urine flow which helps flush out the small stones. Daily taking a small quantity of boiled and cooled milk, diluted with a glass full of water also helps flush out the stone.

Understanding the major factors that promote stone formation is essential to avoid the formation of new stones and growth of the old ones. Having milk and milk products along with seedy vegetables or fruits such as tomatoes, guavas etc promotes stone formation. Therefore people who have stones, should strictly avoid the combining such foods forever. Prolonged medication of about 2 to 6 months is needed to flush out the stone.
